Laguna Vilamoura

Laguna Vilamoura, opened in 1990 and designed by American architect Joseph Lee, features an 18-hole, par-72 course that integrates seamlessly into Vilamoura’s flat landscape. Its unique features include water hazards, wide fairways, and a layout that emphasizes strategy over power. The almost level terrain ensures a comfortable walk and makes it easier to read the course from the tee.

However, the apparent width can be misleading. Numerous lakes and water hazards affect many holes and influence every decision. In this context, choosing the right club and shot placement are more critical than distance. The greens tend to be large and well-guarded by bunkers, featuring subtle contours that demand accurate putting.

When the wind blows—common in the Algarve—the course alters its character, challenging players’ ability to control their trajectory. Laguna is also notable for its open layout, characterized by low vegetation and unobstructed views that enhance the feeling of spaciousness.

This layout accommodates various skill levels: providing some margin for the average player from the tee, while penalizing errors in critical areas.
