Palheiro Golf

Palheiro Golf, located 500 metres above sea level on the hillside overlooking Funchal Bay, offers a layout that combines pronounced elevation changes with wide-open views of the Atlantic. The course is an 18-hole, par-72 design by Cabell B. Robinson, opened in 1993.

Since then, it has established itself as one of Madeira’s leading courses. The routing makes use of natural ridges and valleys, with tees and fairways that force you to think carefully about both line and trajectory. The round is structured into five par 3s, nine par 4s and four par 5s, a sequence that balances rhythm and difficulty. The greens are fast and undulating, demanding precise reads, while the bunkers and side slopes punish inaccuracy.

The setting forms part of the historic Palheiro estate, next to the Casa Velha do Palheiro hotel. The clubhouse overlooks the harbour and the city and serves as a natural meeting point before and after the round. The practice area includes a driving range, a putting green and a six-hole course. Palheiro is not long in absolute terms, but the altitude, wind and elevation changes alter the perception of every shot. Here the scenery is a constant companion; the real focus is on strategy.
