Montecastillo Golf

Montecastillo Golf, located in Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz province, is one of southern Spain’s top courses. Designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1992, it offers 18 holes, par 72. The design reflects the ‘Golden Bear’s’ strategic approach: wide tees, challenging second shots, and greens that demand precise putting.

The layout seamlessly integrates with the rolling landscape, alternating wide fairways with rough patches that penalize inaccuracy. Well-placed bunkers are more than decorative; they shape strategic decisions and set the pace for each hole. Water hazards appear at critical points, notably in the final stretch, where the 18th hole boasts an elevated tee and a green protected by a lake—an elegant conclusion that captures the course’s essence.

Montecastillo hosted the Volvo Masters for five consecutive editions, from 1997 to 2001, a period during which the best players on the European Tour tested the course design. This competitive legacy is reflected in the “championship” layout, which is long with back tees and balanced for different skill levels.

Maintenance is one of its strengths. Well-defined streets, firm and uniform greens, and a carefully maintained setting reinforce the feeling of a solid course, designed to be played with calm and strategy. Throughout the resort, golf is the central focus, but it is the course that defines the destination’s personality.
